Drop-off​ Locations

Waste and recycling are generally consolidated at locations known as transfer stations. At transfer stations, trash is transferred from the compactor trucks that serve neighborhoods into more efficient over-road trucks for transport to a landfill. Recycling is similarly transferred, but it is taken to material recovery facilities for sorting, bailing and eventual sale. Yard waste and organics may also be brought to a transfer station for consolidation and transport to a permitted compost facility. Finally, there are specialized transfer stations for collecting and sorting construction and demolition debris (some locations take both C&D and municipal solid waste, while some only take one or the other). 

​Some ​transfer stations are open to the public to drop-off material. However, due to minimum tonnage policies put in place by station operators, it is generally much more cost effective for residents to dispose of trash (even bulk items) and yard waste through a curbside program whenever possible. Use of specialized drop-offs (e.g., compost facilities, recycling centers) is also often more cost-effective than using a transfer station.
